Ched Evans – Professional Footballer
At the time of his original trial (at which he was not represented by us) Mr Evans was a professional footballer. Subsequent to his conviction, Kieran Vaughan KC led the case for Mr Evans in the Court of Appeal. Having heard legal argument over a number of days the Court quashed Mr Evans’ conviction.
Successfully defended PF who, along with three others, was accused of raping a fellow student at the Royal Agricultural University.
Following legal arguments relating to disclosure, the prosecution offered no evidence against all defendants on all counts. The case achieved significant national press coverage due to the fact that it was largely as a result of successfully obtaining the complainant’s mobile phone download that resulted in the case being dismissed. Anonymous Case
Represented a retired senior public servant who was accused of possessing indecent images. Received a suspended sentence.
GS
GS was a retired businessman who was accused of a number of very serious sexual offences against children in what turned out to be a police sting operation mounted against him. GS pleaded guilty to the offences and received a suspended sentence of imprisonment.
PZ
Represented a professional who was found in possession of a large number of indecent images of children. The defendant pleaded guilty and received a suspended sentence.
R v CB
Catherine was chosen to represent a 19 year old charged with the rape of his long term girlfriend. The allegation was made when they were both 17 years old. The defendant sent a message which the prosecution relied on as a confession. It read ‘I’m sorry i kept going when you told me to stop. That was dumb of me’. After only 3 hours of deliberation, the jury acquitted unanimously.
R v BA
Catherine was instructed to represent a young man accused of rape after meeting someone on a night out. The defendant was caught on CCTV running home shortly after the time of the incident. The first jury could not make a decision. Catherine was instructed for the retrial and once again the jury could not reach a decision. Therefore, the prosecution offered no evidence and not guilty verdicts were recorded.
R v AE Snaresbrook
Catherine was chosen to act as Junior Counsel in the trial of a defendant accused of multiple historic sexual offences against a family member. The jury acquitted swiftly him after less than an hour of deliberations.
R v GS
Appeal against rape conviction – Catherine acted as Junior Counsel for a young man sentenced to 9 years for an alleged rape of girl under 16. The appeal was based on an erroneous character direction by the Trial Judge. The appeal was allowed and the applicant was released from custody immediately.
